The Red Ribbon Media Awards returned this year to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation. BFM89.9 producer Loo Juosie was presented with the “Outstanding Achievement in Broadcast Media” award for her series “Positive Lives”.

The four-part series, co-produced with Kamal Solhaimi Fadzil from the University of Malaya, presents the human stories behind the stigmatized condition through the eyes of the people living, caring and working with the condition.

“Our goal was to shed light on the human stories on HIV/AIDS in Malaysia by talking to people and understanding the challenges they have when they go through their lives,” said Loo Juosie, adding, “even the medical practitioners, activists and caretakers - all of whom have devoted much of their careers to reduce HIV rates, spread awareness and care for people living with HIV.”

Established in 1996, the awards honoured the vital role played by the media in HIV/AIDS awareness and education.

“Two of the things that were apparent to us (when we finished) was that we need to do away with the negative stigma and to have more comprehensive sex education. It’s going to be hard to reduce infection rates if we don’t change our attitudes towards HIV/AIDS.”
