"In the 1980s, when we approached the authorities about human trafficking, they asked us, 'Why are you talking to me about traffic jams?' They didn't know what human trafficking was about. It was not spoken about much."

Globally, even in the US and Europe, they would talk in terms of fraud cases (instead of human trafficking). The whole question about selling of peoples was unheard of," says Aegile Fernandez in our interview. Aegile is the programme director at Tenaganita, an NGO which focuses on protecting the rights of women, migrants, victims of trafficking, and other marginalised groups.

Aegile tells us that much has changed since the 1980s, when she first became involved in anti-trafficking efforts. Today, there is much awareness among locals about human trafficking, thanks to educational campaigns and plenty of media coverage. But Aegile says that this hasnâ€™t helped the situation. In fact, the problem has only gotten worse.

"We are speaking to a generation today who is selfish. When I was growing up, we had the whole neighbourhood looking after each other. But today, we don't even know our neighbours down the road. That facilitates trafficking in your own neighbourhood."

Terence Conrad, director at TerryandTheCuz, had, like many of us, a distant perspective in relation to human trafficking. That changed when he and his work buddy Govin happened to share a conversation with a few factory workers near his office, who turned out to have been trafficked for labour in Malaysia. Shocked by the fact that trafficking happens in plain sight, Terence and Govin decided that they had to do something about the human trafficking situation.
