Tonight we had a woman whose without a doubt a real veteran in the Malaysian theatre world. Having a strong backing of over 30 years in experience, there’s little who can trump her on and off the stage when a production is coming along. Her name is Shanthini Venugopal and we catch up with her on her shows!
Over the years Shanthini has freelanced with almost every aspect in the theatre industry. One hand she’ll be a producer, stage manager and on the other, its prop manager and being the front of house for various (local and international) theatre companies since 1981. Shanthini’s name can be found as one of the pioneer members of The Instant Cafe Theatre since 1989 and even today, you’ll find her performing for some of their shows.
The year 2000, Shanthini started her own theatre company called The Jumping Jellybeans (JJB). The company focuses on creating productions which specializes for children. She shares her theatre training with student with learning disabilities since 2001. Their work has been recognized by the BOH Cameronian Awards for ‘Best Community Arts project’ in 2005. To this day, JJB has participated in International Children’s Theatre festivals in Iran, Singapore, India and Germany.
Shanthini’s love for teaching has brought her all over from schools to special homes. Some say, Shanthini has taught storytelling workshops to about 1500 different national schools over the course of her career. Interestingly after a long 15 year hiatus, Shanthini will be doing a solo-gig called LOOK AT ME in November 13th &14th at the Space Toccata, SS2, PJ.
For the record, Shanthini scored 16!
