Tonight we had a woman who started off climbing the advertising ladder as a copywriter but soon found out that there’s better things for her and by 2015, she has her own comic strip in The Star newspaper! Her name is Sam Hepburn and we get a quick chat about all things witty.
Sam Hepburn is a 29 year old Scottish-Malaysian who spent eight years living in the advertising world before jumping ship to be a full-time comic artist. When Sam was younger, she had a knack for drawing and all things funny. Her mother bought her an hilarious advertising book and soon she was inspired to go for a career in advertising.
As she was chasing to be that famous copywriter she wanted to be, she started noticing she spent most of her time doing dull brochures and banking ads. It left Sam feeling like she’s only doing 15% of her life. She turned to doing illustrations and found it was an addictive release for her. In 2010, as she slowly transitioned from her copywriting work to more comic based.
Sam published a picture book titled NO! A Lesson In Love, which talks about positive enforcement in caring for animals.By 2013, she served as an illustrator for Even The Most Positive Person In The World Gets Cancer, an inspirational book by cancer survivor Mezwyn D’Junus. Sam’s main block of work now is her new comic strip Welcome To Agency X. A comic about three characters working for an advertising firm.
It includes characters like Percy who is a jaded designer, the cynical copywriter Sam (Hepburn’s cartoon representation of herself) and the wide-eyed intern Russell. Agency X is a collective of Sam’s inner experiences on finding a living from being creative, hilarious observations and terrible exaggeration. But sometimes Sam straddles along the lines of people who feel stuck in their day jobs and are hoping for a time they will ‘escape’. Agency X runs six days a week in The Star newspaper.
For the record, Sam scored 17!
