Tonight we’ve had a woman who’s started off as a backup singer and now her voice has graced Malaysian radio waves, television and award ceremonies all over, she’s none other than Juwita Suwito!
Born in Malacca but left for KL at the age of 10, Juwito is actually the first generation of her family to have been born and raised in Malaysia. Her father a Chinese Indonesian while her mother was a Peranakan Singaporean. Her family decided to move to Malacca after Singapore exiting the federation in the early days.
Juwita’s career started off as being a backup vocalist for Malaysian artists such as Ning Baizura during her teenage years for gigs, concerts and award ceremonies. Soon she was called up for some recording demos by East Asian studios which one thing lead to another, her rendition of Breathe Again was published by Warner Music Taiwan in the original soundtrack for Mandarin TV drama series ‘The Outsiders’.
When 2004 arrived, her solo career received the real kick it needed as she released her debut album, Brand New World. It won Best Local English Album for Anugerah Industri Muzik 2005. She continued to make headway in the global arena with well-received performances in Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Kenya, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland and Taiwan.
She has been featured as the vocalist for numerous productions such as Gol & Gincu and it’s TV series, singer for the main theme song for Akademi Fantasia, one of the vocal coaches for Malaysian Idol Season 1 & 2 and is also one of the founding directors of Four Forty Records.
Her new single, Just Like That was released earlier in June.
For the record, Juwita scored 16!
