Tonight we had a man who’s been accredited as one of the major pioneers of the Malaysian digital film movement. He has over 25 years of experience and directed a total of 43 films. He is none other than James Lee!
Born and raised in Ipoh, Perak; originally James was trained as a graphic designer. He began acting and directing theatre plays before venturing into video filmmaking, relying solely on self-taught skills. It all started in 1999 when he made four short films to kick start his filming career. His first full feature film was Snipers in 2001.
One of James’ most prominent films were The Beautiful Washing Machine in 2004. It won numerous awards from various international film festivals, garnering glowing reviews from TIME Magazine and others. A lot more awards came by till 2007 James created Doghouse 73 Pictures, a Youtube channel which pushes for quality indie content. It all came together in 2014 as under his guidance, Doghouse won Digi’s WWWOW Award for the Content Category.
James even had a whole French film festival focusing on his work in 2007, he has a plaque with his name engraved to mark the moment. His first Malay horror movie was a surprise hit as well in 2008. Earlier this year, he also did a TED talk on the public needs to be more active when taking medium in. Whether it be a Youtube video or a full scale movie.
