The death of Mohammad Naim Mustaqim Mohamad Sobri, 16, allegedly at the hands of seniors at the Royal Military College (RMC), set the country talking about the 'ragging' phenomenon, which persists in many schools here in Malaysia.
Ragging is said to be "the doing of any act which causes, or is likely to cause, any physical, psychological or physiological harm, apprehension, shame or embarrassment to a student."
Pyschologist Dr. Goh Chee Leong talks about the ragging culture, and discusses if it is indeed an ice-breaker and exercise in personality development between senior and junior students, or just an excuse to bully and exert power.
