Paternalism in Malaysian Tertiary Education

In the old days, parents would encourage teachers to beat their children if they were naughty, some even going so far as providing the teacher with a special cane. Nowadays corporal punishment has been outlawed, but the Malaysian education system is still shaped around paternalistic values. Has it given our children a holistic education or has it gone too far?
