Themed “What Lies Beneath,” the Freedom Film Festival returned with its 14th edition this past week. We speak to two filmmakers who had their documentaries screened at the festival. Marcus Vetter’s “The Promise” tells the tale of Jens Soering, who has been in prison since 1986 for the brutal murder of his lover’s parents. Sean McAllister’s “A Syrian Love Story” traces the 15 year relationship of Amer Douad and Raghda Hassan against the backdrop of the Syrian revolution.
