The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Malaysia will stop paying the stipend of RM300-RM500 each to refugee teachers beginning July 2015 due to lack of funds. Anticipating the the financial difficulties that will be facing all 125 UNHCR registered refugee schools, the Cybercare Youth Organization is organizing a fundraising event on May 9th to support refugee children’s education. With close to 20,000 refugee children in Malaysia, 12,000 of them of school-going age and only 7,000 getting some form of basic schooling, Jessica Wee, a committee member of Cybercare Youth Organization, tells us more about the plight of this invisible community.
