John Maynard Keynes’ prediction in 1930 that leaps in our productivity would lead to people choosing to work less and have more leisure time. Keynes was prescient on the former but terribly underestimated the force of capitalism. We organize our time around paid work and look forward to free time in order to recuperate from work.
