A debate is taking place in the European parliament over a draft biopiracy law that would require the pharmaceutical industry to compensate indigenous people if it makes commercial use of local knowledge, such as plant-based medicines. Biopiracy is the commercialisation of indigenous knowledge and is an offence in a number of national legislations around the world, including India.
