The current pandemic has made us all aware of the importance of conducting clinical research on vaccines and drugs in order to find safe and effective therapies to prevent and treat diseases. Malaysia is involved in some key global trials, including the Solidarity trial by the World Health Organization for COVID-19 treatments. Another notable global study led by Malaysia was the genetic study by Cancer Research Malaysia and the University of Cambridge on breast cancer risk among Asian women. But on the whole, how progressive are we in leading the way for clinical research in the region? What are the clinical and economic benefits for Malaysia to spearhead research, not only in the local arena but internationally? We discuss this with Dr Akhmal Yusof, CEO, Clinical Research Malaysia.
