Many of us are familiar with the story of trying to convince older family members to familiarise themselves with devices like smartphones or smart watches. Some of them learn how to use these devices fairly quickly, while others may be more averse to depending on technology. But assistive technology can be extremely helpful to monitor the health and wellbeing of senior citizens, especially if they have serious health issues, or spend a lot of time alone. We speak to consultant geriatrician Dr Hakimah Mohammad Sallehuddin from Universiti Putra Malaysia and Assoc Prof Dr Fakhrul Zaman Rokhani, Head of the Gerontechnology Program at the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing.
