More common in men, hernias are caused usually by pressure and weakness of the muscle and manifest as a protusion of the organ or the fascia of the organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it. What this means is that there will often be a bulge where there should be none.
LTK, this week's letter writer, wants to understand more about his own hernia and the issues surrounding it such as operative treatments, cancer, infection and how it would affect his overall health.
