Worldwide, what disease is the number one cause of death among women? Your first thought might be breast cancer, but in fact, coronary heart disease is the single biggest killer of women. In Malaysia, women are three times as likely to die from coronary heart disease as from breast cancer. Yet, many inequalities and biases stop women from recognising the symptoms of a heart attack and getting early treatment. Dr Effarezan Abdul Rahman, Immediate Past-President of the Women's Heart Health Organisation, joins Azrul Mohd Khalib of the Galen Centre for Health & Social Policy, to discuss the gender gap in heart disease, and how we can help women catch up in terms of better recognition of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
