One of Silicon Valley's oldest chipmakers, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., or AMD, the world's second-biggest maker of microprocessors for PCs, laptops and corporate servers and one of the largest suppliers of graphics processing units.
But AMD, which is Intel's chief rival, has been losing money and struggling to redefine itself as consumers increasingly favour tablets over laptops.
