Hero with a Stiff Upper Lip

Our resident literary critic detours to Scotland for author, John Buchan, who has created a man-on-the-street-hero with a stiff upper lip--Richard Hannay. The protagonist goes on the run putting his life at risk in the name of his country.  The Thirty-Nine Steps was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock.
