Our resident literary reviewer Umapagan Ampikaipakan interviewed author Barbara Ismail at the Singapore Writers Festival and reviews her Kain Songket Mysteries series in this week’s episode of Bookmark.
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Barbara spent several years in Kelantan in the 1970s and '80s, studying Wayang Siam and the Kelantanese dialect. The first book in her Kain Songket Mysteries series, Shadow Play, follows the middle-aged sleuth Mak Cik Maryam as she investigates a murder in Kelantan and the second book Princess Play was launched at the Singapore Writers Festival 2013.
