There's a saying that goes, "It's lonely at the top, the air is thinner" and it is not so much that it is lonely, it's more that at the top its harder to breathe, meaning that it takes a certain type of person to be able to exist at the 'top' of the corporate ladder. Ordinary people can't and they slip into mediocrity. So on the journey to 'greatness' you will often feel lonely or alone and even more alone when you finally reach the apex. But the people who count would have been with you along the way, and will still be there when you make it.
