Street Books is "a bicycle-powered mobile library founded in June 2011, serving people who live outside" (according to the organisation tagline) in Portland, Oregon. Books are available to check out and return, using an old-school card and pocket system inside each cover. Patrons are not required to show identification or proof of address, and are asked to return the books when they are able. Being homeless doesn’t mean a person isn’t intelligent or educated. Yet finding ways to self-educate can be difficult. Street Books has created a greater engagement between their patrons and the larger housed community, and built a bridge with literature between the two. We spoke to the founder and street librarian of Street Books, Laura Moulton who is also an artist and writer living in Portland, Oregon.
