Picturing a traditional film photographer at work, you’d probably imagine the dull red glow of cramped, eerie darkroom. Shift your mind's eye to sunny LA, where 27-year-old entrepreneur Jesse Genet sheds new light on the photographic process. Genet’s company, Lumi, produces a series of ultraviolet-activated fabric dye that develops into a rich and permanent colour in sunlight, called Inkodye. The dyes allow people to print vivid, photo-realistic images on natural materials, like denim and raw leather, without any chemical treatment or processing, creating amazing photo-imprinted apparel, home decoration and more. We speak to Jesse, who bootstrapped a company using crowd-funding, collaboration and creativeness - to learn about how Lumi came to be.
