Picture the last 12 months without the remote and collaborative work tools, streaming video, instant messaging or social media that have formed the background to our daily lives. Or that there were no smart devices or Internet to connect to. It is impossible to imagine 2020-21 without the technology support that we have had. Further, this being a dynamic and ever-evolving space, think how far these technologies have the potential to go over the next few years. Self-driving cars, remote surgeries, 3D holographic meetings are all becoming a reality and will become a norm soon.
Unlike 3G or 4G, 5G is the new-age globally unified communication standards. This means that 5G has lower promotion costs, more flexible applications, and greater potential than previous communication standards. It’s true that 5G networks can be up to 100 times faster than 4G networks, but the transition to 5G is more than a conversation about speed, no matter how tantalizing those speed jumps are.
In tests conducted with Ericsson and Qualcomm technologies, OPPO’s 5G CPE Omni achieved download speeds of 4.06Gbps, which means a 2GB ultra high-definition (UHD) movie can be downloaded from the cloud to your device in just four seconds. But focusing too intently on speed alone underplays the innovation and possibilities that these new network standards represent.
While it’s easy to imagine the effect of livestreaming 4K video to family and followers, it’s harder to visualize the network infrastructure that makes it possible. Similarly, our understanding of the Internet of Things (IoT) is expanding beyond the fringe of smart fridges and toasters. Thanks to the low-latency and device sharing capabilities of 5G technologies, we’re establishing increasingly dense networks of voice-activated and app-controlled information systems and sensors within our homes and workplaces. A lot of technology deployment is possible with data and services being stored on the cloud, and available on-demand. Networks that communicate with each other in real-time create the most comfortable and efficient experience for the end-users.
With GSMA Intelligence estimating that there will be more than a billion 5G connections by 2025, we urgently require intelligent solutions to ensure that those networks operate as efficiently as possible. As the top ten 5G declaring companies, OPPO has registered more than 3,700 5G related patent families to date, working with partners like Ericsson and Qualcomm to create smart 5G networks for the coming generation of 5G devices and innovations.
Low-latency is critical to the next generation of data-hungry, autonomous technologies. In essence, latency is the time taken for data to travel between two points. Reducing the journey time of that information will help to make autonomous cars and drones more self-aware and allow them to operate in the world of flesh and blood humans more safely. Likewise, fully automated smart factories will see us shift the burden of heavy labour from a human to a mechanical workforce, enabling enormous productivity and efficiency gains in the process.
By providing faster, more responsive and more reliable connectivity, 5G is creating the core infrastructure needed for a new generation of medical technology. Low latencies will allow surgeons to operate remotely on patients thousands of kilometres away, expanding the provision of specialist medical services within far-flung and community healthcare facilities.
Central to that idea of unleashing new possibilities is the number of devices that can connect to the network. Technologies like 3G and 4G offered a one-size fits all approach to connectivity, with everyone sharing the same spectrum, whereas 5G both vastly increases the number of devices that can connect to the network and assigns them to virtual networks that meet their requirements for speed and latency, ensuring that each network slice operates optimally.
5G will literally impact every aspect of our lives. There are expected to be 125 billion devices linked by 2030, according to analysts at DBS Group Research. The coming times will be defined by 5G and technologies that will improve the quality of life for a global population that has never been more interconnected.
The future development of 5G will not be limited to mobile communication technology; it will grow into a technology platform, or technology base that will merge and resonate with cutting-edge technologies including AI and cloud. 5G will develop and change in ways beyond imagination and provide countless possible technological futures.
