The Rukunegara is perhaps best known to most of us as the five principles that were recited in school assembly, or that were listed behind exercise books. But recitation might not have necessarily translated to practice. Last month, a group of seven activists proposed adding the Rukunegara as a preamble to the Federal Constitution. The group calls itself Rukunegara Muqaddimah Perlembagaan (RMP), and its initiative has sparked a fair share of debate about the rightful role of the Rukunegara and the potential implications of such a move. We speak with RMP members Dr. Chandra Muzaffar, Chairman of Yayasan 1Malaysia; and Datuk Dr. Shad Saleem Faruqi, Tunku Abdul Rahman Professor of Law at Universiti Malaya, to find out more about the proposal.
