One of the biggest characteristics of 80's music are the sounds of digital synths. Today, digital synthesizers feature prominently in electronic dance music, in video games, and in science fiction movies and television. All of this can be attributed to the work of one man. Today on the Evening Edition, Uma speaks to John Chowning, who discovered FM synthesis back in 1967. He is also the founding director in 1975 of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University.
