In 2009, Noorfadilla Ahmad Saikin’s appointment as a temporary teacher was revoked after it was discovered that she was pregnant. She sued the government in 2010 and, four years later, in a landmark case, the Shah Alam High Court awarded her RM300,000 in damages for breach of her constitutional right to gender equality. The government has stated it will appeal the decision. We speak to Noorfadilla about how this case has affected her life, and her lawyers Honey Tan and Joachim Xavier about the legal implications of this decision if it is upheld.
