Last week, the news of former journalist Sidek Kamaro getting arrested for a retweet made national headlines. The cause of controversy was over the legality in the manner he was arrested. Policemen knocked on his door close to 5am in the morning, searched his house, confiscated his mobile phone and laptop, before handcuffing him. All this was done without a warrant. The Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said a warrant was not necessary because the investigation was carried out under the Communications and Multimedia Act, but several human rights lawyers and civil liberty groups contest that assertion.
